Helshoogte Pass

Or Hells heights (means steep heights) is one of the most loved and travelled roads in the Western Cape. The Pass links Stellenbosch with the Drakenstein Valley and is built through Jonkershoek and the Simonsberg mountains.

It is also one of the oldest passes in the Cape: it was built in 1854 after it was only used by elephants.

With its spectacular winding pass on a descending slope it is perfect for cyclists and motorists.

It is said that Simonsberg resembles the figure of Simon lying on his back.

Keith Kirsten is a celebrity horticulturalist and has an expansive knowledge of African flora.

The gardens include a spectacular display of 300+ new and mainly indigenous plants, shrubs and trees. Especially milkwoods, yellowwoods and sneezewoods; camellia and coffee jasmine create private alcoves for the luxury lodges.
